Abstract:
This study investigates the seismic performance of brick masonry walls with central openings, strengthened using various glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) configurations. Simulated earthquake loading was applied through indirect corner shear to induce diagonal tension, replicating in-plane seismic forces. Five groups were tested: Group G1 served as a reference, while Groups G2 to G5 explored GFRP reinforcement strategies, including vertical-horizontal strips, diagonal bracing, partial/full mesh overlays, and hybrid composite layouts. Results revealed that GFRP strengthening improved behavior: vertical-horizontal strips reduced the number of cracks by 60 %, diagonal strips increased energy absorption by 37.5 % and ultimate load by 10 %, and full mesh overlays enhanced stiffness by 70.5 % and energy absorption by over 200 %. Hybrid systems were most effective, with increasing ultimate load by 16.7 %, stiffness by 59 %, and reducing the number of cracks by more than 70 %. Strengthened walls also showed improved shear resistance (up to 1.43 N/mm2), confirming the effectiveness of GFRP in restoring performance.
