Abstract:
This editorial highlights that heavy metals affect aquatic organisms at multiple biological levels, including gene expression, physiological processes, and ecosystem stability. These contaminants accumulate in aquatic environments and biomagnify through food chains, creating risks for both aquatic life and human health. Future research should focus on long term biomonitoring programs that use molecular and ecological biomarkers across different species and ecosystems. Interdisciplinary approaches combining ecology, genetics, environmental chemistry, and public health are essential. In addition, science based policies are needed to regulate pollutant discharge and protect aquatic ecosystems from heavy metal contamination.
