Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine autistic traits among different university students and their relationship to academic performance, which could impact their achievements with appropriate and early intervention. A total of 4,000 students from practical (e.g., science, engineering) and theoretical (e.g., arts, humanities) colleges were assessed using the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) questionnaire. The study found a statistically significant difference in the degree of autistic traits based on the type of college. Students in practical colleges constituted the majority of the group with low AQ scores, while students in theoretical colleges formed the majority of the high-scoring group. A statistically significant difference was also found in the degree of autistic traits in relation to academic achievement. Approximately 65.4% of students in the low-scoring group achieved an "Excellent" grade, whereas 41.2% of students in the high-scoring group achieved an "Excellent" grade. The study concluded that autistic traits are distributed to varying degrees among the general university student population and are higher in students of theoretical colleges compared to those in practical colleges. It was also found that the female gender is significantly associated with lower scores on the Autism Spectrum Quotient.
