Abstract:
The exchange rate is a key macroeconomic factor that plays a vital role in the external economic activities carried out by all countries. The recent developments in international trade would appear to have exacerbated fluctuations in exchange rates. The liberalization of capital flows in the last two decades and the enormous increase in the scale of cross-border financial transactions have increased exchange rate movements. Currency crises in emerging market economies are special examples of high exchange rate volatility. The purpose of this paper is to Address the impact of exchange rate volatility on economic growth in Egypt. The empirical analysis is based on data spanning the period 1992–2018. Exchange rate volatility calculation is based on the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH). Using the corresponding Mixed Data Sampling (MIDAS) regression models, we found that exchange rate volatility has a significant negative impact on economic growth in Egypt. The paper also provides some important evidence about the transmission channels by which the exchange rate volatility affects economic growth. the research confirms that foreign investment flows, current account, and the level of inflation are important transmission channels of the exchange rate effect on economic growth, while the budget deficit couldn’t be considered as a transmission channel for influence.
