Abstract:
Klebsiella pneumonia is a frequent nosocomial pathogen and major public health concern that causes difficult to treat infections worldwide. The control of infections caused by K. pneumoniae becomes difficult due to its higher resistance to antibiotics. Recently, due to increased antimicrobial resistance, there is an urgent necessity for the development of alternative antimicrobial approaches to efficiently control bacterial infections. Bacteriophages have been considered as a potential therapeutic option due to their safety and avoidance of harm to normal flora. Meanwhile, antibiotic resistance increases, phages retain its ability to compact antibiotic-resistant bacteria in addition to its ability to inhibit biofilms. Many reports have shown that phages are highly effective against various multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens in humans. This study aims to isolate and characterize bacteriophages that target K. pneumoniae isolated from patients with nosocomial infections.
