Abstract:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of educational training program on drug adherence and self- management among adolescents with epilepsy. A quasi-experimental design was conducted on a sample of 50 adolescents suffering from epilepsy aged 13-18 years attending the Pediatric neurology and Epilepsy outpatient clinics at Zagazig University Hospitals. Data collection tools included; a structured interview questionnaire for demographical and clinical data; Epilepsy knowledge questionnaire, Morisky 8-Item Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8); number of seizure frequency and Epilepsy Self- Management Scale. The results revealed a statistically significant improvement in epileptic adolescents' knowledge and drug adherence with decreased in seizure frequency through the study phases. Also there were a statistically significant increase in the overall Epilepsy Self-Management mean scores from 85.52 at pretest to 125.2 at posttest (P=0.001). It could be concluded that the educational training program has a profound effect on improving adolescents' drug adherence, knowledge about the disease and treatment regimen, seizure frequency, as well as self- management behaviors and lifestyle issues. Based on the results, it could be recommended that continuous education and training of epileptic patients about drug adherence and self-management strategies should be conducted in specialized epilepsy care units to help them have a normal life.
