Nursing Schools Students’ Willingness to Work with Older Adults and Its Relation to Ageism Attitudes

Abstract:
Background: The older adults are the vulnerable group but may still be one of the powerful groups in the society with great influence. Therefore, preparing nursing schools students to meet the needs of their care is very important. The aim of the study was to assess nursing schools students’ willingness to work with older adults and its relation to ageism attitudes. Research design: A descriptive, cross-sectional design was used to conduct this study. Setting: The study was conducted at four nursing schools (Tulrak, Fakous, Awlad Saker and Kafer Saker) were selected randomly from fifteen schools in Sharkia Governorate. Subjects: A purposive sample of 200 nursing schools students. Tools: Three tools were used to collect data they were: Self-administered questionnaire for socio-demographic characteristics of the nursing school students, The Palmore Facts on Ageing Quiz, Willingness to work with Elderly People Scale (WEPS), and Ageism Attitudes Scale (AAS). Results: 24.0% of nursing schools students had satisfactory total level of knowledge about older adults. Additionally, 29.0% of them had total level of positive willingness to work with older adults. As well, 22.5% of them had total level of positive ageism attitudes. Conclusion: Unfortunately, the results revealed unsatisfactory level of knowledge, negative willingness and ageism attitudes of nursing schools students regarding older adults. Recommendations: Effective health educational package should be implemented for nursing schools students in order to raise their awareness and change their low level of knowledge, negative willingness and ageism attitudes, and further study especially qualitative studies should be conducted to explore other factors that influence knowledge, willingness of nursing schools students and their ageism attitudes.
