Abstract:
With the rapid urbanization and industrialization, air pollution becomes one of the most severe ecological problems on world scale and in Egypt in particular. The concentrations of metals (Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb and Ni) in 90 street dust samples collected from five different sites at Zagazig city, Egypt were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (A.A.S) after digestion with aqua regia. The highest levels of metal concentrations were found in the samples from industrial heavy traffic area. While the lowest levels of metal concentrations were noted in the street dust samples from the rural area. The ranges of metals concentrations were 48.88- 178.78 μg/g for Pb, 0.93- 1.33 μg/g for Cd, 163.83- 282.51 μg/g for Zn, 56.49- 63.01 μg/g for Cu, 59.17- 78.86 μg/g for Cr and 7.63- 17.19 μg/g for Ni. The results of this study show that the metal concentrations at the city were higher than the rural concentrations, but they were below the mean world- wide values of street dust samples. Since heavy metals are widely distributed in environmental matrices, selected metals were determined in urine of 75 children of both sexes in order to determine whether children at the slightly polluted city have been exposed to higher elemental concentrations; as compared with children living in rural area. Correlation analysis showed that weak associations (r = 0.201 and 0.195) were detected between Cu and Ni levels in urine and their levels in street dust.
