Abstract:
This paper discusses the structure behavior of concrete slabs with openings, which are reinforced by fiber polymer bars. The study consists of an experimental investigation of nine concrete slabs with dimensions 1100×1100 mm and depth 80 mm. Two slabs are considered reference without openings, four slabs with a central square opening 250×250 mm, two slab with a corner square opening 250×250 mm, and one slab with a central circular opening of diameter 280 mm. Where both the square and circular openings possess the same area. Experimental results indicate that the ultimate flexural loads and behavior of concrete slabs reinforced by carbon or glass fiber reinforced polymer bars (CFRP or GFRP) has improved in comparison to the concrete slab reinforced with traditional steel bars. This is attributed to the improved tensile strength of CFRP and GFRP bars which is 3.94 and 1.83 times more than the yield strength of steel reinforcement respectively. The paper discusses the findings of the study regarding the first cracking loads, load-carrying capacity, deflection and crack pattern.
