Effect of Educational Program on Depressive symptoms and Assertiveness among nursing students

Abstract:
University students are in a unusual period of life , during this vital stage, they experience vast demands which can aggravate depressive symptoms . Assertiveness is fundamental social skill and it can help students in reliving depressive symptoms. Educational program is one of efficient interventions that improve psychological health for nursing students Aim of the study: was to evaluate the effect of educational program on depressive symptom and self assertiveness among students at faculty of nursing. Research design :A quasi –experimental deign was used in this study. Setting: the present study was conducted at the Faculty of Nursing, Zagazig University. Subjects: one hundred and eighty from nursing students were enrolled in screening phase, Based on the results obtained from the assessment phase, the educational program(pre-post test) was carried out on one hundred and twenty three from nursing students. Tools of data collection: Socio-demographic information sheet, Beck Depression Inventory Scale and Students' assertiveness questionnaire . Results: the present study showed that there was a highl prevalence rate of depressive symptoms represented ( ninety seven) ranged from mild to severe level and more than half of participant students experienced low level of assertiveness at the pre intervention phase, while following the educational program there were statistically significant enhancement in the levels of depressive symptoms and assertiveness. Conclusion: it was concluded that educational program sessions were effective in inducing significantly reduce in the levels of depressive symptoms and improvement in the levels of assertiveness Recommendations: The study recommended that, establishing psychosocial counseling center or psychiatric clinic at Faculty of Nursing to assist students to handle issues that constitute a source of stress in their life
