Abstract:
This paper studies the impact of climate changes on food production through the assessment of short and long run effects of carbon dioxide and average temperatures on crop production indexes in MENA countries during the period 1980-2011. The co-integration technique was applied using the autoregressive distribution lags (ARDL) model. Results showed that the environmental index (CO2 emissions) had a negative significant effect on food production in the long run; whereas that effect was found insignificant during the first and second lags of the short run and positively significant in the third lag of the short run, but the average temperatures was negatively significant on food production in the long and short run.
