Abstract:
Background: work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) are the most common form of occupational diseases. Nurses are exposed to high physical demands at work resulting in various musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) which raise the need for planning and implementing of an interventional ergonomics program in the workplace. Aim: to assess prevalence of WRMSDs, to measure physical work load and to evaluate the effect of ergonomic intervention program on ICU nurses regarding WRMSDs. Materials and Methods: Interventional study was conducted on 90 ICU nurses. Study was carried on three phases: phase one included 5 section Questionnaire to assess the current situation, Phase two included health education training program on WRMSDs followed by phase three after 3 months to evaluate the effectiveness of the health education training program. Results: Most of nurses reported a moderate physical workload. lower back pain was the commonest cause of changing job nature (11.9%) and receiving medical treatment (61.9%). Coping strategies significantly improved after implementing the training program. Work style evaluation showed that characteristics responses to the workplace were significantly reduced in the post test and also Reactivity to high work demands. High levels of satisfaction were reported for videos, exercise program, and manuals. Conclusion & recommendations: Educational training programs on ergonomic principles are recommended for nurses in order to reduce work related musculoskeletal disorders
