Abstract:
Purpose: The goal of the current study is to characterize and differentiate the possible cranial TB findings, a form of neurotuberculosis by using the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) . Methods: Thirty-three (33) patients with cranial TB, 14 females and 19 males with a mean age of 25 years (8-56). Different MRI sequences was performed on all patients. Results: A 33 patients had multiple tuberculomata or solitary tuberculoma , topographically located in frontal lobes (n=10 patients), temporal lobes (n=9 patients), brainstem (n=5 patients), cerebellum (n=4 patients), occipital (n=2 patient), caudate nuclei (n=2 patient), and vermis (n=1patient) in order of decreasing frequency. Out of the 33 patients, twenty patients (60.6 %) had only tuberculoma/s, 8 patients (24.2%) had tuberculoma/s associated with meningitis, three patients (9.0%) had hydrocephalus with tuberculomata and two patients (6.0 %) had tuberculoma/s with ischemic infarction. All lesions seen on different MR pulse sequences and the tuberculoma classified according to MR criteria into caseating and non caseating type. Conclusion: MRI is helpful in diagnosis and characterization of cranial TB and the associating complications.
