EFFECT OF ROW SPACING AND WEED CONTROL METHODS ON GROWTH OF SOME BREAD WHEAT CULTIVARS IN NEWLY CULTIVATED SANDY SOIL

Abstract:
Two filed experiments were carried out at the experimental field in khattara District, Sharkia Governorate, Egypt during the winter seasons of 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 to study the effect of three row spacing patterns and five weed control methods on growth of some Egyptian bread wheat cultivars in new cultivated sandy soil. The results revealed that plant height, number of tillers/plant, number of leaves/plant, leaf area/ plant, leaf area index, crop growth rate and plant dry weight at the early growth stage (50 days after sowing, DAS) did not significantly affected by varietal differences. However, leaf area duration, plant dry weight at 65 DAS and net assimilation rate at all growth stage were significantly differed. Growing wheat cultivars in different row spacings had no significant effect on plant height, number of tillers/plant, number of leaves/plant, leaf area/ plant. On the other hand, leaf area index and plant dry weight were significantly higher in row spacing of 15 cm. There were no significant differences in plant height, number of tillers/plant, number of leaves/plant due to weed control methods except at growth stage of 65 DAS and combined at 50 DAS in favor of chemical weed control. Leaf area/plant, leaf area index, crop growth rate and plant dry weight were significantly higher in unweeded treatment.
