Abstract:
Abstract Background: Dengue fever is emerging as a serious global health problem. Nurses serve as the frontline healthcare workers who assist in the diagnosis and treatment of dengue and other febrile illnesses. Aim: To assess the effect of educational sessions about dengue fever on nurse's knowledge and attitude at Zagazig Fever Hospital. Subjects and Methods: Research design: A quasi-experimental design was used in carrying out the study; during the period from November 2017 to January 2018. Setting: The study was conducted in Zagazig Fever Hospital, Sharkia Governorate. Sample: The sample included 71 nurses (39 diploma nurses, &32 bachelor nurses), working at the outpatient and the emergency clinic according to inclusion criteria.Tools of data collection: Two tools were used: Tool one: A questionnaire consisted of two parts: part A was used to collect data relating to demographic characteristics of the nurses, while part B involved Nurse’s knowledge about dengue fever, self-administered questionnaire. Tool two: Nurses’ attitudes toward dengue fever, self-administered questionnaire were designed to assess nurses’ attitude toward dengue fever. Results: The comparison of pre and post-tests for nurses’ knowledge and attitudes revealed highly statistically significant improvement (p <0.001) that justified the research hypotheses of educational sessions’ implementation. The total score of their knowledge increased from 9.9%in pre-sessions implementation, to 87.3% one month post sessions and the total score of their attitudes increased from 60.6% in pre-sessions, to 91.5%, one month post sessions. Conclusion: The post-test score was higher than the pre-test score both in knowledge and attitudes of nurses regarding dengue fever. Recommendations: Primary prevention of infectious diseases like, dengue fever should be given priority and education about it should be applied in fever hospitals, through in-service health educational training session to be provided to all nurses in the fever hospitals especially the newly appointed ones before starting their work.
