A study of erequency and some risk Factors of Urinary Tract Infection among Pregnant Women Attending El Sadat Family Health Unit in Suez Governorate

Abstract:
Background: Urinary tract infections UTIs during pregnancy are among the commonest health problems world wide, especially in developing countries, including Egypt It has several adverse outcomes not only on the mother but also on the fetus as well the aim of this study was to improve health status of pregnant women, reduce morbidity of pregnant women and prevent its complications on the mother and fetus through early detection of UTIs during pregnancy, study some risk factors predisposing such infections and find the most common organism of UTIs Method : A cross-sectional study was carried out on 274 pregnant women aged from 18 to more than 35 years old who were attending the antenatal care clinic at El Sadte Family Health Unit in Seuz Governorate. Through a period from the first of May 2011 to the end of October 2011. Data were collected through a pretested questionnaire , doing complete urine analysis and urine culture. Results : The results of this study revealed that, the frequency of UTIs during pregnancy was 30.29% out of 274 the causative organism was E.coli and the most important risk factors predisposing for the development of urinary tract infection during pregnancy were the unsatisfactory personal hygiene, 3rd trimester, past history of UTI, drinking water less than 6 glasses per day and presence of constipation. Conclusion and recommendations : this study concluded that, the frequency of UTIs during pregnancy was 30.29% out of 274, the causative organism is E.coli and the most important risk factors predisposing for the development of urinary tract infection during pregnancy were the unsatisfactory personal hygiene, past history of UTI, drinking water less than 6 glasses per day and presence of constipation. Therefore, the study recommends health education about sanitary personal hygiene, repeated urine analysis and culture early in pregnancy and during third trimester.Specific antibiotics should be prescribed to avoid adverse pregnancy out come.
